And Now We Interrupt Our Regular Programming…

March 18, 2009

misspettigrew…to bring to your attention a little ditty about a lovely, art deco eye candy of a film; Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.  This featherweight film, starring Amy Adams and Frances McDormand, is about a drab jobless governess (McDormand) who in a moment of desperation lies her way into employment as a ‘social secretary’ with the dizzying Delysia LaFosse (Adams), an ambitious singer/actress.

There’s nothing too deep or meaningful to be found in this film, despite it’s attempts to add weight with the looming threat of war, but I was too busy admiring the set and costume design to notice.  That’s not to say there are not other merits for this film, it’s well acted and the music is in keeping with that of the late 1930’s era.  I almost forgot I was watching a film from our current decade, almost.

So, if you’ve got a sweet tooth and are looking to turn your brain off for a few hours may I suggest Miss Pettigrew.  Now excuse me while I go off in search of popcorn and licorice…
